Scuba Diver Shark Battle!

We started working on a new game about two weeks ago. It's a single screen multiplayer game for 2-4 players where you play as scuba divers using your harpoon to collect fish are bring them back to your boat. You also have to face a number of hungry sharks who also have their hearts (and stomaches) set on getting the fish. You win the game by collecting a set number of fish before your opponents do. You can also win if all of your opponents are devoured by the blood thirsty sharks. And if you don't mind playing dirty you can help speed that along a bit by flinging the sharks at them with your harpoon gun.

We started the game at a secret lounge area at GDC and we didn't really have much of a plan of what we wanted to do with it. The only thing we knew about it when starting is that it was going to be underwater and there were going to be sharks. After adding in the divers and sharks, we thought a harpoon gun would fit the theme nicely and decided to make it work a lot like the ninja rope in liero. We used to play liero a lot as kids and using your ninja rope to fly around the level and pull your opponent always made for some fun games. So we decided to make the harpoon gun is the center of the game. Everything in the game can be latched onto and pulled including fish, sharks, the boats, and the other players.

I've also been trying to keep a closer log of the things I've worked on each day and take more screenshots in order to document the development better. Here are some of the screen shots:

Day 8 (today)

The game is getting pretty close to being finished. We will have the first version of the game done by Friday since we are planning to have it set up at an event on campus called Arts Crawl. I'm excited to see people play the game, I'm really happy with how it's turning out.

Finally, the SharkArm Brothers are making a game with sharks!

GDC 2012

Hey Everyone!

Last week, Nate and I attended the Game Developers Conference for the first time. It was also our first time in San Francisco. It was a completely amazing experience. We got to meet lots of cool people. Some of them were fellow developers we've been talking to on forums for years and the people who made some of our favorite games. It was nice to find out that the people from the internet actually have faces and are real human beings. My theory that people on the internet don't actually exist was proven to be false.

It was great talking to everyone there and being immersed in such a creative environment. Looking at other people's games and hearing them talk about them (especially when they are leagues better than my own) really inspires me to try to take my stuff to the next level. I was in a bit of a creative slump after the Chicken Bandit (at least in terms of game design) and I really needed this kind of recharge.

There was tons of different stuff going on there the whole time. The IGF games set up on the show floor was probably the best part. All of the IGF finalists games were set up and it was fun going around talking to all of the developers.

One night they had a GDC showing of Indie Game: The Movie, which is a terrific documentary that follows a few independent developers through various stages of the process. It was really well done and I recommend it to anyone who has eye balls, ears, or any type of capacity to experience a film. The film makers and indie developers in the film were all there and did a Q&A panel after the film. I love that sort of thing, and it was great to hear what they all had to say about the process of making it. The developers in that film are lucky because they have a movie that documents events of their life. This is a great thing to have and look back on. I know this fact because I, too, have a movie about my life. Many of you may not know this but it is true. It is recorded on a series of VHS tapes, filmed by my dad's camcorder. It covers all the important events in my life including first steps, first words, first day on the bus to kindergarten, and much much more. One may even say too much more. The movie even has deleted scenes such as the one entitled “Accidentally Pressed the Record Button While Carrying in Backpack,” which features two and a half full hours of complete darkness, rumpling noises, and the faint sound of voices in the background which you can't quite make out what they are saying.

Nate plays video games at the IGF show floor.

We also attended a party / chiptune music show that featured a bunch of different chiptune artists on stage playing their instruments. If you are not familiar with chiptune artists, their instruments typically consist of computers, weird electronic devices, lots of wires, and in most cases, gameboys. I have never went to one of these before and it was quite an interesting thing to experience. All those years as a kid that I sat on my couch and played my gameboy by myself, I had no idea I could have got up on a stage and played it for a crowd that would rock out to it. There were lights flashing, bleeps blooping, people “dancing”, the best way to imagine it would be to think of what a robot dreams about when he goes into a seizure coma. That is pretty much the only way I can describe it.

One notable performer there played with altered vocals in addition to the chiptune music. He sounded like someone who lost is vocal box due to throat cancer. For the first couple songs I thought it was supposed to be an anti-smoking PSA.

There is so much more I could go on about, but I think I'll cut it off here for now. It was a totally awesome trip and I'm already looking forward to going next year!

Chicken Bandit Notes

I normally scribble down a whole bunch of designs and notes and other stuff when I'm working on a game, but I usually end up losing by the time I am done. For the Chicken Bandit though, I wanted to keep everything together so I kept a notebook devoted to The Chicken Bandit. Now that the game is done, I went through and scanned every page of the notebook, which turned out to be about 30 pages. Here are a couple of my favorites out of the pages.

These are some of the original ideas for designs of the enemies. Some of them made it in the final game and others didn't.

Here's the original design for the map and some of the ideas for the different worlds and things that the player might experience. We were originally going to have some tasks that the player had to complete on the map like getting an item from a level to unlock a new pathway. We decided to cut that aspect of the game since it didn't really add anything interesting to the experience.

Here is a page full of math that makes me looks smart. If you know math, don't look over it because I probably made some mistakes. I was trying to calculate how to get the final boss' arms to move correctly with a joint in the middle, but it was taking to long to get to work so we decided to make the boss a bit simpler.

I like this page the best. It is a checklist I made towards the end of the game for everything that needs to be completed for the game to be finished. Notice how it is titled "Finish the Effing Game 3.0." This is the third version of the list since after the first two were completed, more stuff still needed to be done. There is actually a version 4.0 which is the true final checklist but it is not as long and not as fun to look at. It's nice going back through remembering what it was like to get all of these tasks done.
